New paper about nitrification and N2O at SPOT

New paper shows urea can be an important source for ammonia oxidation and nitrous oxide produced in the Eastern Tropical Pacific is transported thousands of kilometers

Congratulations to former graduate student Dr. Sarah Laperriere on her new paper appearing in the journal Limnology & Oceanography. In it, we report on a nearly two year time-series of nitrification rates and nitrous oxide (N2O) concentrations at the San Pedro Ocean Time-series (SPOT). Urea is an important substrate for nitrification during non-upwelling periods at SPOT. Local nitrification is a minor contributor to N2O production, but high concentrations of N2O at depth appear to be transported from the Eastern Tropical Pacific, highlighting the importance of that region for N2O production on a global scale.
