Jose presents at ASM & publishes a genome announcement!
Graduate student Jose presented at ASM Microbe 2025 in Los Angeles and published a genome announcement for a high pH organism!
The largest microbial sciences gathering in the world, the American Society for Microbiology Microbe 2025, was heled in Los Angeles from June 19-23, 2025. Jose presented a poster on his unique findings regarding an extreme ammonia-oxidizing bacteria called Nitrosomonas sp. ANs5. This halotolerant and extremely alkali-tolerant bacteria is capable of growth at a pH of 11.4, which is the highest of all chemolithoautotrophs. This organism is pushing our understanding of survival at the upper limits for life as we know it!
Jose also published a genome announcement for Nitrosomonas sp. ANs5 in August 2025. Based on genomic comparisons it was deduced that this organism is a novel species of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria that was isolated from saline-alkaline lakes in Mongolia over 25 years ago. Stay tuned for follow up studies on this unique organism!
